Teen Safety

What every teen needs to know about sexual assault

  • Every year 1 to 1.5 million girls are raped in the U.S.
  • Boys can be victims too.
  • Only 5% of teenagers ever report the rape.
  • Sexual assault is any sexual activity forced upon you against your will.
  • Rape involves penetration, however slight, that is forced upon you.
  • 68% of sexual assualts are committed by someone the survivor knows.
  • Rape occurs most often in the survivor's home, perpetrator's home or car.
  • Verbal pressure is the most common type of force reported by victims.
  • Teen sexual assault occurs primarily within the context of a "date".
  • Most rapists are about the same age and have a similar background as their victims.
  • Rapists come from all socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
  • Primary motivation for rape is to CONTROL, OVERPOWER, and HUMILIATE someone.

Safety tips on dating...

  • Always have an alternative plan to get home and carry some emergency money with you.
  • It's your body! No one has the right to force you to do anything you do not want to do.
  • Be assertive and act immediately if your limits are reached.
  • Be suspicious of anyone who doesn't listen to you when you say "NO" to anything, or who tries to talk you into doing something you don't want to do.
  • Communicate sexual limits to your date. Give clear messages, both verbal and nonverbal about what you don't want on this date.
  • Avoid secluded places as they may make you more vulnerable.
  • When dating someone new, go in groups a few times. Use the "buddy system" whenever possible. Watch out for your friends at parties or public places.
  • Make sure someone knows where you are and when you will be home.
  • Don't hitchhike or take rides from any person that you don't know that well.
  • No matter how much money someone spends on you, you never owe anyone sex!
  • Trust your inner "gut" feelings. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, LEAVE!
  • Remember alcohol and drugs make you more vulnerable and are often related to date rape.
